Christ the King Sunday, 2013
Luke 23:27-43
“In the face of death is the promise of paradise”
Grace, mercy, and peace be to you from God our Father and from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
Today is the last Sunday of the Church Year. Can you believe that next Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent? Before we begin to prepare for the birth of our Savior…we celebrate this day Christ our Lord as King of all creation. It is a marvelous day. It is a joyful day. It is a day that we rejoice that our Risen Lord is seated in heaven as our King. Christ has been victorious and now reigns forever and ever. That is news to shout from the rooftops.
But the text appointed for this day is the crucifixion of our Lord. It seems to convey nothing but sadness. “But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?” (Luke 23:28-31)
“Don’t weep for me, but weep for yourselves.” “Blessed are the barren.” “Mountains…fall on us!” Our Lord is warning the women that gathered about the coming judgment. While this is indeed a sad event with our Lord dying on the cross…this was exactly what our Heavenly Father had planned to save His people. But the judgment to come down upon Jerusalem was one that came due to unbelief.
Before our Lord’s triumphal entry into the Jerusalem on Palm Sunday our Lord wept over the city and its people. “And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” (Luke 19:41-44)
That visitation was at hand. The Savior of the world had been born…He was there with them in the Holy City…The Prince of Peace had finally come…but they rejected Him. Jesus warns the people…that their judgment was at hand. If God would allow His innocent Son to die on the cross…what would He allow to happen to those that rejected Him? If the Romans would allow this Jesus to die on the cross…even after finding Him innocent…how would they treat those deemed guilty? If the leaders of the Jews would kill Jesus who came to bring salvation…how would they treat those who deserved punishment?
Our Lord tells the women that the crosses they must bear…the punishment the people will endure will be so bad; so brutal…that "they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’” (Luke 23:29-30) It will be so bad that mothers would wish their children weren’t born. It will be so bad that they will wish for the mountains and hills to kill them quickly rather than bear the wrath that will come.
These words are a warning to our generation as well. “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near.” (Isaiah 55:6) “We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.” (John 9:4) When death and judgment come…then it is too late to seek salvation. The work we have before us as Christians is to share the Gospel…for time is of the essence.
But often we don’t think time is of the essence. We live to enjoy what this world has to offer. We love to eat, drink, and be merry. We love to celebrate and have good times. We love the sinfulness of this world. “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never!” (1 Corinthians 6:13-15)
Last Sunday was a horrific day for many in our state. Hundreds of homes were destroyed. Possessions were strewn across hundreds of miles of farmland. Many were hurt. Some died. Tragedies happen on a daily basis. They happen in the Phillipines…and they happen here at home. While we don’t wake up each morning thinking “I might die today,” that is certainly the reality. “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near.” (Isaiah 55:6)
We have been given the Gospel. The Savior has been born, has lived, has died for us, and has risen from the dead. Christ Jesus is the King of all Creation. We have that wonderful news recorded for us in Scripture. We have been given the gift of the Gospel. But how do we live. Do we weep for Jesus when we should be weeping for ourselves? Do we blame God for our troubles when we should be admitting our own guilt? Do we look to God as a miracle worker calling for Him only when tragedy strikes or do we truly have faith in a God that loves us and forgives us daily? Do we seek the Lord in Church while He may be found…or will we wait till it’s too late?
In the midst of tragedy; in the midst of hardship; in the midst of persecution; in the midst of death itself is wonderful and joyful news! It is the joyous news heard by a condemned criminal; a man that deserved the death penalty he was receiving: “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
What beautiful words from our Lord’s lips. Hanging on the cross…dying for the sins of the people…suffering God’s wrath…Jesus absolves this sinner and He absolves us; sinners who believe. By faith, the same faith that this thief had, we may come to our Lord begging forgiveness. And our Lord doesn’t withhold…in love…in the rejoicing of heaven…Jesus forgives us and declares to us that forgiveness…and gives us His very body and blood for the forgiveness of sins and strength.
When the scenes of this earth fade from our mortal vision, may our eyes be fixed on Christ as our only hope and comfort and may our lips whisper by faith the heartfelt petition: “Lord, remember me and take me into Your kingdom.” (Luke 23:42) The same cheering and precious response will greet you: “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
Christ Jesus is the King of all Creation and that is wonderful and joyous news…because our Lord came to save sinners…and save us He did as He died on the cross for that thief and for you. Paradise is yours. Amen.
Now may the peace of God which passes all human understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior. Amen.
